This project started as a research database accompanying the Ph.D. dissertation “The Art of Quotation. Forms and Themes of the Art Quote, 1990- 2010” by Dr. Nina Heydemann, published in 2021 with Logos Verlag, Berlin, Germany. The research period from 1990 to 2010 and its accessibility to art and digital images has opened up new creative opportunities for practicing artists.

Many artists refer to other artists, and they have been analyzed, categorized, and put into a comparative view in this thesis. As a basis for the written thesis, the accompanying database has been filled with artworks that directly quote an artwork from the past – regardless of the original’s age, genre, or location.

The resulting database currently comprises over 250 artists. Only contemporary artworks created between 1990–2010 (with some exceptions, such as works from 1989/90 or 2010/11) and bearing a direct reference to a former artwork have been entered.

By now, the database has become an encyclopedia for anyone interested in researching contemporary artists quoting older works of art in the given research period. This database is now accessible to interested users and, in addition, includes an upload function for own suggestions.
